I saw him in full glory a few years ago at his alma mater in White County -- mind you, these kids and their parents could vote. As the son of someone who was "called up" in the early 60s, I resent anyone misusing that call...it causes a lot of heartache in a lot of families. Still does.<BR/><BR/>The entire GOP leadership, since MMM was head of OMB, hates to spend money on Vet Affairs. It's kinda odd, given their loud support of all things Pentagon. Frankly, it's a blatant contradiction, to fund the hell out of the Pentagon, to the degree of horrible costly duplication of services, and cut Vet benefits.<BR/><BR/>But, it's an easily-identifiable line item to cut. It is most unlikely he ever had a shot fired at him by any Iraqi. Or vice versa!<BR/><BR/>And who can forget Buyer's grandstanding and obfuscation at the beginning of Bush's Iraq Folly? Steve asked for a leave-of-absence from Congress, saying the Army needed him. The Army said "Nope". A Congresscritter would be a most tempting target on the battlefield. Buyer returned glumly to Congress. <BR/><BR/>His predecessor on the Veterans Cmte, Smith of NJ, was getting too supportive of veterans.
