US Attorney is a patronage-type job, much like Postmaster used to be. To the victor go the spoils, and Pres. Obama won the right (unfortunately) to appoint patronage employees.

I've had very few encounters with Joe Hogsett, but they were pleasant enough. I will note, however, that the "Where is Joe Hogsett?" ad from the 90s when he was Sec'y of State & didn't come to work was highly effective.

A prosecutor has great discretion in whether to file criminal charges against a person. The problem with people like Joe Hogsett is that when it comes to political figures, politics trumps the law. Democratic and Republican appointees alike in this district for years have ignored public corruption cases. You'll find FBI agents in the local office who will complain about the southern distict office hampering their investigations. Is it too much in these particular times to expect someone of the caliber of a Patrick Fitzgerald to be appointed from the outside to turn things around here?

I've dealt with Joe Hogsett on a few good government-type matters and I've found him to be someone who is surprisingly independent-minded. I don't think Linda Pence would have been in a position to be as independent as Hogsett could be.

We knew it was going to be a Democrat. Hogsett might turn out well. I don't care if he ran some elections and lost.

Joe was Secretary of State, the top securities cop in the State of Indiana. I'm sure Hogsett's Securities Division (that Rokita now runs) brought actions under Hogsett's watch.
