If you don't have a newspaper that will chase bad guys, then who will when political parties, city departments, and law firms are corrupt?

Read Dick Cady's 'Deadline: Indianapolis' yourself. Ask where did the newspaper go that, while skittish about damaging favorite-son Mayor Lugar, still did a full-blown '70's investigation and publication documenting massive corruption in the police department.

With due respect to Tully's onsite reporting, where was the examination on education reform and parenting standards that netted only half our kids graduating from IPS? "Leading" the country at one point according to USA Today.

With due respect to a limited budget, where was the outrage over reduced library hours as we're finding the money for a new Pacers scoreboard?

With due respect to greater technological competition and declined readership, where was our newspaper as a 15-14 deal was cut with a vendor of poor repute to manage our downtown parking for decades? The vendor, city, council chairman, and (suprise) the paper, all using or working for the same legal firm.

When the CIB can appoint anybody they want, spend what they want, tell us any economic status they want, and there is no daily paper or mass media to thoroughly investigate and affirm or dispute their contentions- you're right, they don't need a PR firm.

My question is who does the investigation of why we no longer have a newspaper?
