Folks take military jobs because the payoff is quite high, and they think that the mental problems only happen to someone else, that they'll be just fine. Or, it's just worth the risk, given they really have no other options.

If you're a nobody from Nowhereville, the military gives you instant respect and a steady job. If you get to mow down innocent Iraqis with the door gun in your Apache, that's just the fun exercise of the authority culture in which so much of America is sickeningly raised.

What good are any of those benefits, anon, if you're mind has been permanently scarred from the fatigue of war to the point you are no longer able to function normally in society? Have you read the stats on the mental and physical state of those returning from Afghanistan and Iraq? It's horrifying. Yeah, if you're among the few who are top commanders in the military the benefits are probably well worth it. The rest are abandoned after leaving the service.

Lobbing a cruise missile into Syria gives Assad full moral authority to lob one, or similar, into the U.S.

Our country's financial health rests on a knife edge. If the Syrians make their point by conducting attacks in two places, our foolish Syrian adventure could plunge the country into a profound depression as investing capital instantly dries up.

Israel is a brilliant 50-year plan. At the end of WWII, some Russians, Germans and Poles launched a plan in the works since the 1890s, stole a Middle Eastern country, recreated Europe in the desert, and got the most powerful country on Earth to pay for it, arm it and defend it.

In a mastery of marketing, these Russians, Germans and Poles infiltrated the dominant American religion and convinced some really dumb, but reflexively martial, American citizens that their own Bible demands that they arm, fund and defend this sun-drenched Mediterranean paradise for Northern Europeans who wanted better digs.

It's quite brilliant, but also deeply embarrassing that people 5,000 miles away know we're that dumb of a country.

Great pay. Great benefits. Steady employment. Instant friends and social network. A lifetime of eligibility for membership in social organizations not open to the public, and the "right" to put those stupid bumper stickers on your car for the rest of your life. Special license plates, too.

Discounts everywhere. You get exalted at public events, and the hostage ticketholders have to give a salute to your job before being allowed to watch what it was they bought a ticket to see.

You get to walk around in public in your battle uniform, letting the people know just who's boss and reminding them just who has the ability to pint the gun at whom. You are given power over others far in excess of what you could have privately.

When you leave the military, you get a lifetime pension for a relatively short period of employment, and you're given priority hiring for other government jobs, usually involving pushing other people around. Military employment in police departments runs far higher than in almost all other occupations.

Almost all supposedly "limited-government" Republicans will respect you more if you held a government job by working for the biggest government program in the world: the U.S. Military.

What we have in Syria is Washington, with our tax money, underwriting covert activities of Israel in Syria. The latest poll shows that 62% of Israelis want the U.S. military to attack Syria, but not theirs.

Our troops are saying hell no, we don't want to go, and I pray that Israel will not be the tail wagging the dog, leading us into war on Syria. But I think that most of the Republicans in Congress are in bed with Israel, as is Obama. I long ago stopped reading "Mother Jones".

I agree the Wall Street-Security-Military-Industrial Complex must be pulling all the strings they can to have Congress vote yes for a military strike on Syria. Profits are stake at here. Cruise Missiles are about $1.5M a piece.

What seems to be lost on these fools that advocate a strike, is this an Act of War to bomb another country. The other issue is if Assad is taken out, in whose hands to the Chemical Weapons fall into???

I would have to think Israel would be mighty nervous. Assad may be a lot of things but he would not be foolish enough to attack Israel. The same cannot be said of the extremists that make up the rebels. I have seen some interviews where equally stupid Americans think that as long as we bomb Syria and do not send in ground troops it is OK to start a War.

Obama and GWB are now of the same cloth. Perhaps the Pope should be called in to perform an exorcism of the White House. Hugo Chavez was right there is an order of sulfur from the American Presidency.
