The reason Henry would have had a very tough race against Nelson Peters (the more moderate Republican, the one with local government experience, the one who didn't break campaign finance laws or lie to a grand jury - that one), is nothing against Tom but simply a reflection of the large number of Republicans in Fort Wayne, particularly after the recent annexation of much of Aboite Township. Tom is a former City Councilperson, a small business owner, active in the community, and from a large and well-liked family. But Nelson Peters is a Republican, and it would have been hard to get over that.

However, it is interesting to note that in last year's Congressional race Tom Hayhurst (retiring D City Councilman) BEAT Mark Souder (incumbent R Congressman - far right winger whom a lot of people strongly dislike) within the city limits (including Aboite). So a Democrat can win. (And Tom Henry is similar in a lot of ways to Tom Hayhurst.)

But, Anon 7:48, if your point is how "you never know" in politics - you are correct.

Henry is as good as elected.

From what I hear, he's a tremendously nice guy, but wouldn't have stood a chance against the nominee the Republicans actually wanted.

Ain't politics strange? This is a perfect argument for closed primaries that make the aprties work harder...otherwise, you could end up with a goof for your nominee, even if you think you havne't got a bat's chance in hell in the fall. Not that Mr. Henry is a goof..but right about now, don't you think Tom John wishes he had a credible candidate in Dist.15?
