The homestead issue is not an issue at all and should be left as is. Those who received the credit moved into a developed area before it was developed and therefor did not anticipate the larger bill. Those who don't receive the credit moved into an area after it was already deemed a good place to live and probably were anticipating the bill. There are certain benefits to recognizing a trend and moving accordingly, one of them being that you will pay less on tax bills and avoid pay day loan no credit checks applyings.

Well, Ballard also wants authority to raise the income tax to pay for a $3 billion mass transit plan. Indianapolis already has the highest income tax rate in the state, and the highest food and beverage tax rate. He's just providing more incentive for people to move to the suburban counties to escape the higher taxes in Marion County, not to mention the skyrocketing crime problem. Like I've said before, Ballard hasn't met a tax increase he doesn't like. The man who ran for mayor in 2007 was a total fake.

From the comments I heard from those Rs who have shown independence from time to time, it sounds like they see it as inevitable. The city needs the revenue for other things. But, they weren't ready to pull the trigger this fast. The public sees it as a tax increase.

So, they are making up a new PR push to make the credit sound unfair.

I also think they are looking for higher public safety taxes to be enabled by the legislature (this is more reading tea leaves than directly quoting folks). To accomplish that goal, they need to show the legislature (aka Luke Kenley) that they have used all the tools available to them.

The problem is that even the Controller calls elimination of the homestead credit a 'tax increase'.

I get that Mayor Ballard had turned into a corrupt politician completely on the take, but what's the excuse of the Republican councilors following in lockstep his twisted fiscal policies? Are they all that stupid, or are they as corrupt as him? I'm so embarrassed by the actions of the Republicans on the council. How dare any of them claim to be Republicans.

They are pushing the corrosive and patently false argument of class warfare as a way to avoid the real issue - eliminating the homestead credit benefits the city by $8.7 million, but penalizes the schools by $3.4 million, and the library, IndyGo and health & hospitals by a combined $1.3 million.

They have no plan to ease the pain of these taxing units. Lop them off at the knees, just so long as the city gets more money.
