It's easy to understand if you dig deeply enough. The Vatican is a front for something quite evil.

Vatican = spiritual
City of London = financial
D.C. = war/enforcement

What do each of the three entities have in common? They are sovereign city-states, corporate entities not connected to the nations they appear to be part of. In other words, the City of London (that is the square mile within Greater London) is not technically part of Greater London or England, just as Vatican City is not part of Rome or Italy. Likewise, Washington DC is not part of the United States that it controls.

These sovereign, corporate entities have their own laws and their own identities.

Old news. Exposed by Anthony Thomas PBS Frontline at roughly 2 years ago. Contrary to what Republican Commentator George Will believes about him, Francis has made some significant changes. Example removed over a third of the Cardinals, allow international investigative bodies within the Vatican Bank; removed many suspected/questionable priests from their posts. Actually pretty good piece. Francis was handed a shit sandwich not thanks to John Paul and specifically Benedict. However, progress is slow.

As a practicing Catholic, it is very hard to understand why the Church fosters this--except knowing the world is the Devil's and not God's. I will say the newly ordained men I have met in the last several years are orthodox and masculine (not overly so, just normal) so there is reason for optimism. "And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age."
