I feel that a majority of people who hate the pit bull breed have never even been around them. My pit may lick you to death, but that is about as mean as it gets with him. I'm sick and tired of these dogs getting so much blame and not the owners. I agree ALL dogs should be up to date on shots, spayed/neutered, micro-chipped, etc, but that goes for ALL breeds. There are plenty of breeds I don't care for, but I don't judge and to each his own. If you don't like it that your neighbor owns a pit bull then move!!!

I know this is an old post... but Southsider asked about resources citing pit bulls trained as rescue dogs or therapy dogs...

There are 2 pit bulls here in Indianapolis alone who are certified Search and Rescue dogs. One is internationally certified. Both of them were rescued dogs. Here's another site that talks about SAR dogs http://www.forpitssake.org/sar.htm

There's a pit bull that works with police in Chicago. http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=news/local&id=6625698 They actually say that pits make terrible police dogs because THEY ARE TOO FRIENDLY.

Leo and Hector, both former Vick dogs, are certified therapy dogs. I think a couple more of the Vick dogs are, and plenty of other pits around the nation, but don't have time to look right now.

To all that are against pit bulls, you really need a wake up call. Pits are not born killers, it is how they are raised. People need to stop being prejudice against them and start blaming the other end of the leash. As for those living in fear of pits in a residential area, your worry should be the number of sex offenders living in your area.

Here come the apologists for the vicious pit bulls.......I wonder if the owner had the dog registered with his homeowner's insurance and I hope the police/city go after the dog owner for expenses and damages. It is time to hold the owers of these killers responsible. Yesterday's Star had another incident with a pit bull.....

Can you cite any information regarding pit bulls being trained as Rescue dogs/guide dogs??? didn't think so..but on the other side-- lots of info on dog fighting, bites and attacks.

Temperament as a breed characteristic does exist in dogs -- witness the forever gentle Golden Retriever. Pit bulls are potentially dangerous dogs, and must be skillfully trained from puppyhood to control the threat. People in residential neighborhoods should not have to live in fear of them.

it is time that we do something about Pits and quit listening to the fools with Indy Pit Crew who whine about what gentle dogs they really are. They are vicious and killers and everyone knows it.
