"Few politicians have been scrutinized more than Dick Lugar during his lifetime of service as Indianapolis School Board member, Indianapolis mayor and Indiana senator," writes Ms. Neal, though she offers not one sentence of evidence to back this up.

While I agree with her willingness to give the Senator great kudos for service, he gets NO kudos for having been scrutinized. That has rarely ever happened. As I describe in Hoosier Hysteria 7, when the spotlight of scrutiny actually got close to then-Mayor Lugar in the '70s, all manner of hell broke less, and Hoosiers were even treated to the distraction of a "homosexual-drug" triple murder in the words of Indianapolis News reporter Skip Hess--and the very birth of the "Homosexual Monster Myth" in Indiana...

It was fitting that Mr. Neal use the old Potter Steward standard for pornography. Under L. Keith Bulen's guidance, dirty money and smutty headlines were the standard response to anyone who got close to Lugar; as I write in Hoosier Hysteria: pot, meet kettle. Lugar's proximity to the corrupt, underworld of L. Keith Bulen has rarely ever been fully explicated. 'This doesn't surprise me' was my first thought when I read it. In the past, she's had so thoughtful articles, but also ones not carefully thought out. What she wrote was more a compilation of what she's heard instead of good research. That's sad considering she's a teacher. Her public deserves better beside a casual partisan Lugarite.
