County Assessor Takes Over For Incapable Center Township Assessor
Marion County property tax bills will be at least a month late this year according to Marion County Assessor Greg Bowes. These bills will include the reassessment Gov. Mitch Daniels ordered conducted last year and will include a reconciliation bill for the difference between what property owners paid last year based upon the previous years' taxes and the newly-assessed amount. Not surprisingly, Marion County Assessor Greg Bowes found the Center Township Assessor, a former IPS janitorial supervisor, incapable of doing his job. "Bowes said his office has taken over the reassessment in Center Township because of 'a question of staffing and skill' of that township assessor’s office," the Star's Tim Evans writes. Bowes said he was pleased with the work done by seven of the township assessors, noting that Washington Township is taking longer to complete residential assessments than expected. Bowes tells Evans, as he has stated in the past, homeowners should not expect much of a reduction in their tax bills because of the reassessment.

Maybe I am not reading this right, who is the Center Township Assessor?
The Center Assessor didn't do his job properly. Which is such a huge surprise, given all the experience he had in that field before he was elected at the behest of the Carson machine.
What a mess Mitch has made of this whole situation...Now Mitch has forced us to pay 3 times in 2008.
If we get the same in the reconciliation bill there should be major protests in the street and not one of us should pay it-it is illegal, unconstitutional (fair and equal it isn't) and they can go to h---.
This is why we need appointed assessors rather than elected ones, and we need to eliminated township assessors.
On another note, these are the same Center Township Democrats who gave my party the gift that is Andre Carson, so I can't say I'm shocked by their incompetence.
Eugene Akers
Center Township Assessor
Thank you, anon 1005. I forgot.
Greg Bowes is the office holder that sent the assessements to the state with out looking at the commercial or industrial properties which were not changed from the time before. Bowes said there was not time. Now a year later he is trying to cover up his hugh mistake.
If the two largest townships are taking a little longer why does Bowes just help them with out making it public.
Does Akers still work for IPS?
Someone, correct me if I am wrong (I know you will) but didn't Bowes stand up at a CCC and said we hired some outside assessors to help with this? I believe it was Phil Borst who asked what credentials these 'consultants' had and Bowes said one was a former assessor. Am I remembering that correctly? If that is the case, of course nothing would change.
When will these Carson haters quit injecting Julia into every news story.........they just can't seem to let go.
12:36, I don't know if they're all Carson haters, but this Lover of Good Government detests the system that gave us Gene Akers. When we had a solid, qualified choice over Akers.
But noooooooooo...that candidate was not favored by the Carson machine, even though she was qualified. Instead, we got Gene. Nice enough guy, but you might as well let him operate on your heart. When elected, he had about as much saavy in real estate assessing as he did in cardiology.
Yikes.
And his predecessor wasn't much more qualified. He was there a long time, but these slopopy errors have been going on for a long time.
Washington's biggest problem was not a qualified assessor--she knows what she's doing. They had a record number of appeals, which tells me the taxpayers up there were paying attention. But those appeals take time. And staff.
For all of us who want township government gone, hang around. It won't be long.

No, he is officially retired.
No need to get personal about Gene. Hye's a nice enough guy. He's just professionally incompetent for the office he sought. His sole qualification was a relationship with Julia Carson.
Again--there was a professionally-qualified candidate in the 06 Demo primary. She almost won, too...although she swam upstream against the Carson gulag.
No, that's not hatin' on dear departed Julia. Its factual.
I'm sorry he retired from IPS. Maybe they'll take him back.
Whom did Gene beat in that 2006 primary?
Who did the Republicans run for that office in 2006?
I believe that the prior center twp. assessor had alot to do with the mess. He was in for how many years and the new ctr twp. assessor had to take over where he left off. Have you ever been in that office? The employees play games on their computers and cuss out loud to each other. Alot of them have been there for 10 years or more. They should have known how to do the work.
852, from what you say, obviously the people in the center township office DON'T know how to work. Perfect example of why this needs to GO!

I'm in Washington TWP and ONE YEAR ago I applied for reassessment. My home is 'valued' at over 60% more than I paid for it, not nearly FMV for a home that was on the market for two years. How long is too long to wait for fair reassessment? So far I've made THREE payments with the promise that that old lady and her team will get to me 'soon'. THIS IS A MESS and they should all be fired.
