Cafe Zuppa Coming To Chamber Of Commerce Building

Downtown office workers in my part of town have been sorely missing Gabriel's Cafeteria in the Chamber of Commerce Building at 320 N. Meridian since it closed down unexpectedly at the end of last year, leaving behind its newly-renovated digs. The building's owner, Bo Elder, announces that Cafe Zuppa will be opening for business at the same location in late May. The new cafe owners plan to serve breakfast and lunch. Fare will include pastries, soups, sandwiches, salads and miniature deserts.

Gabriel's closed? Say it ain't so! I have never found any meatloaf as good as theirs and I was pretty regular from when it was Ed and Marge's (and at 'E&M II' in the Illinois food court) on into Gabe's era. I haven't made many excursions into town over the lunch hour in the past couple of years, and this is very sad to hear.

Damn!

I just started working here and if you knew what gabriel's looked like you would throw up. Ill go from the bottom to the top LOL.In the basement there is 2 coolers one stainless steel and one wood. In the stainless there where mouse droppings and in the wood dead cats and rats. It gets better. We now walk up the stairs and into the kitchen. There oven was so rusted there were holes in the top of it,on the grill grease I kid you not the height of a 24 pack of soda, and it didn't look like the floor was cleaned in years. The new owners and new workers ripped everything out,had exterminators come in,cleaned everything, and now have new appliances dishwasher,grill,pots&pan,etc... It took us hours to clean and is now back in working and good order. Be sure to stop in cafe zuppa this Saturday may 30Th for a get to the know each other kind of thing. June 8Th will be the first official day of business. Hope to see you there and yes everything is clean and up to date now. LOL

Greg, I find that very hard to believe. The owners of Gabriel always maintained the premises well. The place had been completely remodeled in the last year. I'm also not aware of any Board of Health problems
