That new local income tax that Lake County officials adopted earlier this year will generate more revenues than originally estimated according to revised figures released by state revenue officials. That equates to a $10 million unanticipated windfall. The 1.5% income tax is now expected to generate $145 million according to the Northwest Indiana Times.
Indianapolis City-County Council officials should be asking state officials to clarify Marion County's revised estimates for local income tax revenues. Hopefully, they will get honest numbers and not phony numbers intended to bolster the Ballard administration's attempt to pressure local officials into enacting yet another income tax increase. There's a history of state and Indianapolis officials playing games with local revenue estimates.
