Prosecutor Files Felony Battery Charge Against Greg Oden

Marion Co. Prosecutor Terry Curry filed formal charges today against NBA basketball player Greg Oden, a former standout basketball player at Lawrence High School following a domestic disturbance in his mother's home last week where his long-time girlfriend also resided. The charges include a felony battery charge for physically assaulting his girlfriend, who sustained serious bodily injury to her face, including a broken nose, a laceration on her forehead and severe swelling to her face around her eye. He also faces a domestic battery charge for the physical altercation with his girlfriend and a separate battery charge for a friend of his girlfriend, who he also struck during the altercation with his girlfriend according to a probable cause affidavit filed by the Lawrence Police Department. Oden's girlfriend and her friend were treated at Community Hospital North for their injuries. According to the probable cause affidavit, police had difficulty initially getting the victims to cooperate in the investigation. One of the witnesses said an attorney had advised her they didn't have to speak to police. Oden, for his part, accepted responsibility for his actions according to the probable cause affidavit and did not deny striking his girlfriend during an argument. That's purely for show. It will be pleaded to a misdemeanor.

Anon 6:53, I beg to differ. Because the trial is in a Marion County Court, I believe it is most likely to result in dismissal. -Curry may even issue a rationalization for a press release after that happens.

This is just another reflection on what the NBA has become. -Not a place for children to find athletes with leadership and community involvement to emulate. It seems, more and more, a place to look for violence.
