Virginia Takes On Miller's Anti-Reproductive Rights Bill

Sen. Pat Miller’s legislation to deny assisted reproductive rights to gays and single parent mothers may be dead in Indiana, but it is alive and kicking in Virginia. The Washington Blade reports that an anti-gay Republican legislator, Robert Marshall, has introduced a bill in the Virginia legislature which would prevent unmarried women from using assisted reproductive technology.

According to the Blade, the measure would forbid medical professionals from providing to unmarried women “certain intervening medical technology” that “completely or partially replaces sexual intercourse as the means of conception.” The bill provides a list of medical procedures, including “artificial insemination by donor” and invitro fertilization.

Equality Virginia is attacking the legislation as a “direct attack on Virginia’s families.” The group points out that Delegate Marshall sponsored unsuccessful bills in the last legislative session to ban gays from adopting children.
