Allen County Democrats nominated an openly lesbian candidate, Tina Taviano, for sheriff in today's primary. Taviano captured 54% of the vote in a 3-way race. Taviano, who would become the first openly lesbian sheriff in Indiana history if elected, faces an uphill race. Allen County hasn't elected a Democrat sheriff since 1938.
There was one openly gay Republican running for state representative this year. Brent Mullikan challenged Rep. Billy Bright in the 69th District. Bright easily won re-nomination with 80% of the vote.

If happen in Dallas, it can happen anywhere.
Sorry for the typo. Should read "If it can happen in Dallas...".
... and I wonder why no one in the Indianapolis press has caught on that Marion County has now elected its second openly-gay official -- Henry Fernandez on the Lawrence Township School Board. (www.victoryfund.org)
While the Victory Fund says Henry is the first openly gay elected official in Indiana, Kris Kiser's campaign manager -- Washington Township School Board member Rick Sutton -- would disagree. There also may be a president of the Monroe County School Board who should disagree, but she won't return the Victory Fund's calls to confirm or deny ...
The last time the Star talked about a local elected official in Marion Co. being gay was back in the 1970s when the Democratic prosecutor was outed under circumstances that proved scandalous enough to drive him out of politics and move out of state.
I had the pleasure of meeting Tina last year at Ft. Wayne's gay pride. She is a nice lady and I'm very happy for her. I hope she continues her victorious streak in November!
