Latest SCOTUS Pick Talk
The AP's Ben Feller says Obama's list of candidates to fill the vacancy that will be created by the retirement of Justice David Souter includes more than a half dozen choices. His story ticks off six candidates under consideration, including Solicitor General Elena Kagan, Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and U.S. Appeals Court judges Sonia Sotomayor and Diane Pamela Wood and California Supreme Court Justice Carlos Moreno. According to Feller's story, Obama is likely to name his choice before the end of May. Feller says Obama is under a lot of pressure to name a woman or a Hispanic to the court. I've speculated that Obama would pick Sotomayor, who is both a woman and a Hispanic. President George H.W. Bush appointed her as a federal judge in New York. Later, President Bill Clinton elevated her to the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.
