Arizona Diamondbacks Draft Derek Eitel
My nephew, Derek Eitel, will be joining one of the Arizona Diamondbacks farm teams after he was drafted in the 511th spot in today's second day for the Major League Baseball draft. He becomes the first athlete from Rose-Hulman to enter the pros in the school's history. WTHI-TV in Terre Haute was there to witness the moment with Derek, family members and friends at his family's home in Marshall, Illinois.

That's great news. Congratulations.
Very cool Gary! Thanks for taking a break from skewering the usual suspects to share this with everyone.
He may be heading to training camp in Tuscon as soon as Sunday. I noticed that the Diamondbacks have a minor league team in South Bend. I hope he plays there so we can go watch him play occasionally.
What fun for you, Gary. As an aside, Derek is a doll.
Hey this why baseball trumps basketball! The odds of a college basketball player making it to NBA or the step down (Europe) is miniscule compared to playing baseball at either the minor or major league level. It's not like Derek won't have a great degree to fall back on if he doesn't fulfill his dream. I have a buddy who's a basketball junky and knows most of the fathers and sons of some of the best high school players in Indy. All of these kids and their dad's can talk about is when my son makes it big in the NBA. It's good to dream but a back up plan is a necessity in sports. That said CONGRATULATIONS to Derek! Playing a game and getting paid for it not a bad way to have some fun.
