Carjackings In Indy Up 145%

Mayor Bart Peterson's campaign website and television commercials tell us the "outlook is bright" for the city. His website even boasts our near-record murder rate last year is down this year. The front page of today's Star, however, is more representative of the siege Indianapolis residents feel they are under from skyrocketing taxes and crime. It tells us the number of carjackings in the city has jumped a whopping 145% during the first six months of the year. "Carjackings continue to increase at a furious pace this year in Marion County despite police efforts since April to crack down on the crime," Vic Ryckaert writes. "During the first six months of this year, 152 carjackings were reported, compared with 62 through the same period last year -- a 145 percent increase."

As he typically does, when the news is bad Mayor Peterson trots out Deputy Mayor Steve Campbell to do the talking. Calling it a "serious problem," Campbell says, "That's why we wanted to invest $90 million to fight crime." In other words, that's why we asked you to pay 65% more in income taxes after we had already increased your local income tax rate 100% from previous increases in recent years. As for the people who are supposed to be in charge of those crime-fighting efforts, Ryckaert writes, "Chief Michael Spears could not be reached for comment last week." He adds, "Sheriff Frank Anderson was unable to comment Friday because of a family emergency, according to a staff member."

Although Indianapolis police provided some suggestions to Ryckaert on how motorists can help reduce their chances of becoming a victim of a carjacking (e.g., "lock your doors at all times"), the police refused to disclose the areas police have identified as "hot spots" for carjackings. The analysis does show "hot spots" for carjackings in the city. "The department declined to release a list of those locations." "Lorah said the city's six police districts have the information, but he said he did not know whether they have taken action on it." The Star decided to help us out with those "hot spots" city police don't want to disclose. "An Indianapolis Star examination of data through April showed that most of the carjackings had happened east of Downtown in an area bordered by Washington, Meridian and 38th streets and I-465," Ryckaert writes.

As for who is committing all these carjackings, it looks like police are stumped because of the lack of arrests this year. "Metropolitan police think that the same small group of criminals may be committing the carjackings, and that once the perpetrators are captured the crime will decline." That's reassuring.

Might not be a bad idea to keep a Glock within easy reach!!

What happens when The Democrat Machine taxes and spends for stadiums, gives tax abatements to the rich campaign contributors but will not replace retiring police officers and does not hire police for 2 years?

What happens when liberal Democrats don't build enough jail spaces so criminals are turned loose with impunity? What happens when those on probation, parole, home detention are caught in violation and liberal Democrats tell the probation, parole and community corrections not to violate them unless they get convicted of a felony?

-The number of police decrease and crime increases.

Liberal tax and spend Democrats just don't get it. They'll have a martini at the Conrad Hilton, protected by a police body guard (regular citizens don't get personal protection from police) then walk to a catered suite at an NFL game, after the game they'll get into their luxurious city-owned car and go home.

Thanks to Frank and Bart for the revolving door justice system. Everyone knows that doing crime in Marion County will get you no jail time.
The early releases have stopped because they don't put anyone IN the jail to begin with.

I went into the White Castle at Washington St and Lasalle St yesterday to get some sliders and there was a man sitting at a table with a home detention monitor strapped to his ankle.
The city has plenty of ankle bracelets but no one to monitor the crooks wearing them.

Word on the street is that if your a small dealer peddling drugs you won't get jail time and are out within hours of arrest.
Other criminals are getting bail reduced to $10K and walk immediately after arrest.
In other words, Indianapolis is wide open for criminal activity now. A street over from home there were two crack house busted that were back in operation within two days after the bust with the same people dealing.
The good news is that we don't have overcrowding at the jail.

The homicide record is the same this year as it was last. The fuzzy math that Bart uses makes it look less. Ask a homicide detective, they'll tell you how people found in a lake with a bullet to the head are listed as drowning victims instead of murder victims. If you want to tell how Steve Campbell is lying listen to what hhhhhheee sssaaayyyss in an innnterviewwwww.

When thousands of crime reports sit unentered into the data base, the sheriff cannot give out accurate stats about anything. When the Sheriff's Dept took over IPD, the crime analysis unit was gutted. Experienced personnel who collected and relayed essential crime stat information to the street officers were thrown out the door. There are no reliable crime stats anymore. The Sheriff likes it that way.

Your post was notable, Gary, but it drew the IndyU nutcases.

Not pretty.

Sweeping generalities do little to solve these problems. Money, support and police...that's what does it.

Oh yeah, and the court system has to be in sync. Good luck on that.

How insulting.

Only Wilson Allen would post such comments about Indyu since he reads it several times a day.
Thats where he finds his greatest pleasure. He knows that Jen (TDW) is a complete idiot, but she and the rest of the ghetto mafia keep him safe becasue he is their trash picker.

Great job Bart! And you want us to vote for you? You've got to be kidding.

LOL 8:19, you actually proved the earlier point

A public safety tax? Only a moron would believe that.

Crime like this only exists where Democrats gut the justice system & police to spend money on their rich cronies and other interests....(pea shakes, prostitution, bars in government buildings, NFL team new stadium, NBA team, billionaire property developers, etc).

-This city is becoming South Detroit, Indiana...in fact, isn't Swea Pea going to introduce a proposal at the next city council meeting to rename our city "South Detroit, Indiana"?

Tax and Spend. The Democrats have the highest tax increase in the history of Indianapolis!

The Democrats also have a revolving door 'justice' system that is a joke! Look, the prosecutor gets his budget cut by Dems, and told he better stop prosecuting criminals...then the judges give the criminals soft sentences....then the community corrections staff cannot monitor them...then the probation and parole officers are told NOT to violate them unless they get a new felony conviction (even if a gun is found in their bedroom).

Democrats are The Evil Empire! They are destroying everything that Indianapolis was!!!

Teen pregnancy? Abortion on demand? Illegal gambling (how'd 'Swea Pea' get his name)? Political patronage (how'd 'Swea Pea' get an appointed rank and "make-work, do-nothing" job with the fire department and a city car?
Why does "Vermouth Vern" have an appointed rank and take-home city car after his drunken crashes? Why are the Billionaire Simons given tax abatements and city property?

Democrats love crime, because it creates fear...fear of lawlessness and being victimized! They love to instill fear in others....

...and bolster their paychecks at the TAXpayer's expense!

We need more police! We need to send criminals to prison!!!

I thought Wilson was banned!

-and isn't that fool aware of what a hypocrite she is????

Wilson Allen, I saw your post on this blog as what you call 'an anonymous nobody'! You might as well post as your (worthless) self, since you have no fear of reprisals from The Ghetto Mafia, Fart, or Bling, Bling!

My neighbor got burglarized the other day. I'm scared.

In Indianapolis, nobody goes to jail or gets punishment for criminal acts against us!

Thankfully Indiana has a little foresight and has the Castle Doctrine.
