Marine Corps regulations forbid Marines from holding umbrellas while in uniform, even if ordered to do so by the President. Nonetheless, the Commander in Chief ordered Marines to hold umbrellas for him and Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogen during a press conference held in the Rose Garden yesterday. You can tell by the photo how light the rain was by the appearance of the reporters at the press conference, who don't look particularly wet sitting in the rain.

With all due respect to the Marine Corps, I don't see how a regulation of the Marine Corp could dictate that you ignore an order of the Commander in Chief on the subject of umbrellas.
Having said that, given the rain was so light that the audience didn't seem affected by it, I wonder if the order regarding the Marines might have been more about President Obama making a statement of some sort. Possibly.
One would think that the commander would know the regulations, which obviously he either does not or does not care.
As soon as i saw the picture i thought how humilitating, for the Marine and for our country.

Interesting that he ordered in the Marines to keep his head dry, but couldn't/wouldn't, didn't order Marines into Benghazi.
I have to say as former G.I. this appears to me a disgraceful use of the Marines. All part of the militarization of America. We have went from the Citizen Soldier of the Draft era to the Warrior Cult.
Too bad once our soldiers are wounded mentally or physically in our Endless Wars, they cast off.
It seems like now a days our Presidents have to be surrounded by the a Praetorian Guard.
