Evansville Newspaper Goes Gannett
Gannett has been given government approval to build its daily newspaper monopoly. The latest acquisition of Journal Media Group means the Langley-controlled newspaper chain will now own and operate the Evansville Courier & Press. The newspaper chain only has to get control of major dailies in northern part of the state to completely monopolize the major daily newspaper business in Indiana. In addition to the Indianapolis Star, Gannett also owns dailies in Lafayette, Muncie, Richmond and the Louisville Courier-Journal, which provides daily newspaper coverage for a good part of south-central and south-eastern Indiana. The acquisition also gives Gannett control of major daily newspapers in Milwaukee, Memphis, Knoxville, Central Florida, Naples, Florida, as well as several dailies in California and Texas, South Carolina and Washington.

I think consolidation in print media is inevitable because of a dwindling reader base. It gives Gannett a lot of power -- IMHO -- albeit among fewer & fewer readers each year. Thankfully, blogs like Gary's exist to shine the light on government hijinks where rags like the Star won't tread.
Gannett's dead tree locust swarm will culminate in the acquisition of the Shag Bark Sentinel...
Maybe they'll "get around" to reporting on the KY Mitch Slapped, Fraud Young's Chamber Made terms of endorsement...
If the puzzles, comics and sports stats were sold separately they would never sell any papers.
It's interesting to me that Gannett continues to buy into a dead industry. Their web offerings are bloody awful, too. They can't even set up a paywall for crying out loud. Clear cookies and you have unlimited access again. How utterly sophomoric, sort of like their, uh, reporting. Let them buy up all the dailies. Alt.media will find a way forward, even if they change the copyright laws. They're idiots. Really.
